How close is the preview to real matplotlib?
The charts are drawn in your browser to matplotlib's own rules for layout, tick placement, tick labels, margins, draw order, dash patterns and legend placement. Checked against matplotlib 3.10 output, they line up closely. Known differences:
- Fonts: your browser uses the first listed font installed on this device. matplotlib's DejaVu Sans is rarely installed, so text is drawn in Verdana or your system sans-serif and is slightly wider or narrower.
- Tight layout is an estimate of matplotlib's; margins can differ by a few points.
- Legend position "best" counts data points under each corner; matplotlib also counts line segments, so it can pick a different spot.
- Colour maps are interpolated from 8 to 11 stops; xkcd colour names show as grey.
- DPI changes pixel size, not the look, so the preview stays the same size; the pixel size is shown under the charts.
- Settings that only affect saving (saved DPI, bounding box, format, transparency) are exported but not previewed.
